What is the Rice Purity Test?
The Rice Purity Test began in 1924 at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas. In its earliest form, it was a short paper survey published by college students with only a small set of questions to measure how “pure” or experienced someone was based on their life choices.
At first, the questionnaire contained around 10 simple questions and was shared informally among students as a fun social activity. Over the decades, as student culture evolved, more questions were added. In the 1980s, the test expanded into the structured 100-question format widely recognized today.
The test was originally created for first-year students during Orientation Week (O-Week), intended not to judge or label anyone but to help freshmen bond, laugh, and reflect before starting college. Serving as an icebreaker, it encouraged students to open up and connect in a lighthearted way.
Today, the Rice Purity Test extends beyond campus life. Now, it is a popular online quiz for students, friends, and couples worldwide.
The format remains simple: tick the experiences you’ve had, then calculate your score from 0 to 100. Every score is personal; there is no “good” or “bad” number. Each reflects a unique life journey.
How the Rice Purity Score Works?
A higher score usually means you’ve had fewer life experiences and are considered more “innocent” in the context of the quiz. A lower score suggests broader exposure to relationships, social situations, and adult experiences. However, the test is not a moral judgment — it simply reflects what you have experienced so far.
